Standards and Assessment

Standards used:

Reading:
9.3. Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting
motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters,
and advance the plot or develop the theme

9.5 Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order
events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing,
flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

Writing:
9.3b Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection,
and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.

9.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update
individual or shared writing products, taking advantage of technology’s
capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and
dynamically.

Language:
9.3 Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in
different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to
comprehend more fully when reading or listening.

Assessment of Unit:
Reading:
9.3 - By reviewing the blogs/free writes of the students, we can asses how well they understand the development of the plot, characters, theme, etc.
9.5 - In open discussion, we can asses through student input and participation their understanding of the novels structure and plot threads, and how well they perceive the devices used by the author.

Writing:
9.3b - By creating the comic, students will use the elements of dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines themselves. Our job then will simply be to asses whether or not they have included these elements properly.
9.6 - Students will be using an online blog to post their ideas, reflections, and responses on the text to the rest of the class. Assessment, then, will include evaluating their input and whether or not they have provided insightful and appropriate responses for the day's tasks/reading.

Language:
9.3 - Students will learn through reading this novel and writing their own comics how language is used effectively in the graphic novel format. Our assessment of their understanding of this would come from open discussion on the text and then final evaluation on the effectiveness, clarity, and writing style within their individual comics.
